Lance with CVSA team jersey

The news that Lance Armstrong would commence his comeback to cycling to promote cancer awareness (the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign) at the 2009 Tour Down Under was the stimulus for the cancer advocacy group, Cancer Voices SA, to ‘get on their bikes’. By recruiting riders to a Cancer Voices SA team for the Mutual Community Challenge Ride, we raised awareness of cancer and promoted Cancer Voices SA.

Lance’s personal story is truly inspirational, showing courage and determination to overcome cancer and fight back to win (7 times!!) the Tour de France, which is arguably the world’s most gruelling sporting event; (read Lance’s Story ).

"Why I Ride". Lance outlines why he is racing to make cancer a global priority.

LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign and Global Cancer Summit.
Cancer Voices SA are participating in the Global Cancer Campaign with 4 commitments to action. One of our commitments involves cycling! We were invited to attend the Global Cancer Summit in Dublin, Ireland in Aug 09.

Those not riding in the Grand Slam and other events can still meet those Sundays at St Peters College.

Everyone is WELCOME especially our new Team members. The Team continues to grow, so we may split into fast and slower groups.
Our usual arrangements will be a few hours riding into the Hills, followed by a brew at Taylors Blend on Hallet Rd, Stonyfell.
(If we can’t fit into Taylors Blend we will adjourn to the Place Next Door on the cnr of Glynburn and Greenhill Roads, 'Feathers' roundabout).

Cancer Voices SA - Cycling Team - background

We started training together in early December 2008, in preparation for the 2009 Tour Down Under Community Challenge Ride. Thanks Ben Flannagan from Stonyfell EFM Health Club, for volunteering to take us on training rides. The training tips and encouragement from these rides helped many to achieve a ‘personal challenge’ way beyond expectation. Follow our journey... Tour Down Under Community Challenge Ride (23 Jan 2009)

The 2009 Tour Down Under Mutual Community Challenge Ride attracted 7100 riders to challenge themselves over 155km, 97km or 32km sections of the Tour Down Under Stage 4. Cancer Voices SA had a team of 123 riders participate in this ride. Many in the team were cancer survivors, others were the family, friends, or supporters of someone with cancer, and everyone knew about Lance’s battle with cancer. The riders raised awareness of cancer and of Cancer Voices SA with the team name across their back. A highlight for everyone was having Lance accept a Cancer Voices SA team jersey signed by all the team members.

With 123 riders we are proud to say the 2009 Cancer Voices SA Team was the biggest in the Tour Down Under’s history!

Also riding in the Cancer Voices SA team was Michael Milton, the gold medallist paralympian who lost his leg to cancer when he was 9 years old, and 18 months ago was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Michael is a local hero and amazing, inspiring character.

About Cancer Voices SA

Cancer Voices SA aims to: better represent the views of those affected by cancer, promote these perspectives to health professionals, government and the public. ensure patients and supporters are receiving the best possible information, treatment and care. work to increase funding for prevention, detection, research and improved treatments.

With approximately 1 in 2 people in Australia diagnosed with cancer at some time in their life, almost everyone is affected by cancer, whether it is themselves, family, a friend, colleague or neighbour. Cancer Voices SA (CVSA) focus on Advocacy, Involvement, Awareness and Information to represent the views of those affected by cancer.

Currently most CVSA activity is focussed on facilitating access to world’s best-practice cancer treatment and care which also take into account the mental and social effects of cancer, not just the physical symptoms. We seek coordinated, patient-focussed and multidisciplinary care, with high quality information and communication, across the spectrum of diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and palliative care – it is about looking after the whole person beyond their clinical cancer treatment.
